Sobre Saddle Rock Road

Saddle Rock House is a Richardsonian-style American country home, designed and built in 1914 by the famed Hunt and Hunt Architects. This timeless treasure was originally built for renowned inventor, Thomas Robins, who is best known for inventing the rubber conveyor belt while working for Thomas A. Edison. Known affectionately by Shippan Point neighbors as the "Bear House" for the large bear statue inside the gated entry, this waterfront estate has claimed only 4 owners in 103 years.

As the furthest southern point in Stamford, the 1.67 acre property enjoys the finest views of the Long Island Sound horizon including daily sunrises and sunsets, the Stamford Harbor Lighthouse and the beckoning Manhattan skyline.

The property at Saddle Rock House is only rivaled in beauty by the home itself, crafted with ashlar quarried stone and designed with definitive circular arches framing doorways and windows. A Belgian slate roof has protected the residence for over a century. With views of the water from all 15 rooms in the residence, the home feels something like a resort—or even a ship on the water. Saddle Rock House has been continually updated enhancing the original spirit of the home. The new cook's kitchen boasts custom cabinetry and handsome granite tops. A favorite resting stop is the four-season sun room with two arched picture windows viewing nothing but the glistening water. A stone wood-burning fireplace anchors the large living room.  The first floor is completed with an elegant dining room and an ornate oak library.  The master suite features a custom marble bath, a large balcony that overlooks the peninsula and Long Island Sound, and a small Juliet balcony overlooking Stamford Harbor. In total, the estate includes seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms. Adding to the home's old-world feel is a three-room staff's quarters at the north end of the home, which can be accessed through an upstairs passage, or via a private outdoor entrance.

On the East side of the property, a heated salt water pool is enhanced by a vast covered stone grotto, sunken into the pool deck and equipped with a full kitchen. The pool deck also features a Cabana with bath and leads to the boat launch for all your aquatic activities. The parklike grounds feature specimen gardens and fountains framed with a meandering walking path along the impressive 956 feet of direct waterfront. On the Northwestern edge of the property, a full-size, lighted tennis court and stone guest cottage rounds out the country club feel.

The home's rich history is felt in every room in the house, and on every inch of the property. An iconic Bonsai tree now stands at the tip of the property where a canon once stood. It's said that Saddle Rock House was a lookout guarding Stamford and New York Harbors during the two World Wars.

But for all of the home's architectural character, it's truly a modern dwelling, equipped with smart home technology, one-touch led lighting, custom tilt-and-turn windows, and a whole house generator. The cellar was also recently renovated with modern materials, and the vintage, temperature-controlled wine cellar remains in pristine condition.

Each new day at Saddle Rock house is truly dreamlike. While only 40 miles from the fervid streets of Manhattan, this oasis of serenity, perched on Long Island Sound, has served as the current owners' favorite place in the world for over 40 years.
